Using Oracle Database Performance Statistics

Overview

This tutorial examines the installation and configuration of the Oracle STATSPACK in order to monitor Oracle performance.  This tutorial begins with an overview of the Oracle stats and scripts, and discusses the steps required in order to successfully install STATSPACK.  As part of this tutorial the student will install STATSPACK on their own Oracle database servers, and will understand how to create a PERFSTAT tablespace and the proper sequence to run the STATSPACK creation scripts.

The student will also be exposed to the process of adjusting the STATSPACK collections thresholds for SQL statements and how to remove old STATSPACK snapshots after the information becomes too old.

This tutorial will also take a look at the data inside the data tables, and take a look at the STATSPACK table structures including the STATSPACK summary tables, STATSPACK system tables, STATSPACK transaction tables, as well as the STATSPACK events tables.  This tutorial will also take a brief look at Oracle parallel server tables which are used to monitor clustered workload Oracle database systems.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this tutorial, you will be able to:

* Set STATSPACK thresholds
* Explain STATSPACK internal thresholds
* Determine the snapshot intervals with dbms_job
* Run time-series  and exception-based reports
