Install STATSPACK

The installation steps for STATSPACK are relatively simple and straightforward. This assignment will walk you, step by step, through the installation and configuration of STATSPACK. We will be including a complete description of the following steps:

* Creating the perfstat tablespace

* Creating the perfstat user

* Creating the tables

* Installing the packages

* Collecting data

* Scheduling data collection snapshots with dbms_job

* Testing your installation

For details on the installation, please refer to the Burleson book, Chapter 3. Please contact your instructor if you have any trouble installing STATSPACK, because you will be using it throughout this class.

Executive summary on Oracle database tuning

Your challenge is to write an executive summary that describes the differences between the following approaches to Oracle database tuning:

* Top-down Oracle database tuning

* Bottom-up Oracle database tuning

* Proactive Tuning

* Reactive Oracle database tuning

As always, assume that your manager is non-technical, and explain the concepts in plain English.  This executive summary must be no longer than one page.

 The main points of this tutorial include:

* The top-down tuning approach starts at the wide, general level, and drills-down into successive details

* The top-down hierarchy for Oracle tuning is server, instance, objects, and SQL tuning

* The top-down approach is best for system-wide tuning

* The bottom-up approach to tuning can be useful for solving a specific performance problem.

* Proactive tuning requires a monitor such as STATSPACK, to capture performance over long time periods

* Reactive tuning reacts to complaints from the end-user community and relies on alter system commands to relieve the performance problem

* The DBA must use both proactive and reactive tuning methods
