Export Text Data
To start the Export Text Data wizard, click
on the Export icon in the Data Import/Exporthome page. The Export Text Data wizard provides a
method for exporting all the rows in a table and storing them in
a text file. The wizard prompts for the following information:
§
Schema from which to export the table
§
Which table to export
§
Which columns from the table to include in the
export
§
The column separator character, which is usually a
comma
§
Whether or not to enclose text data with special
characters, which is usually double quotes
§
Whether to include the column names as the first
row in the export
§
Export to DOS or Unix file format
§
Which character set to use. This is normally left
at the default value.
At the end of the export the user will be
prompted to either open the text file or to save it as a file.
XML Export
To start the XML Export wizard, click on the
XML Export icon on the Export page. The wizard prompts for the
following information:
§
Schema from which the table is to be exported. If
your workspace is setup with multiple schemas you can
select a schema at this point.
§
Table from which the data is to be exported.
§
Which columns from the table to include in the
export.
§
Whether or not to Export As File.
By default, the Export As File check
box is not checked. Leaving the Export As File check box
unchecked will display the XML data in the web browser. Setting
the Export As File checkbox to checked will provide a File
Download window where it will be possible to choose to either
open the file in the browser or save it as a file to disk.
Import Repository
To view the repository, click on the Import
Repository icon on the Data Import/Exportpage. It is possible to get there by clicking on
the SQL Workshoptab, and
then use the Utilities ą
Data Import/Export ą
Import Repository menus. The two repositories available in the
Import Repository are:
§
Text Data Import Repository
§
Spreadsheet Import Repository
The Text Data Import Repositoryshows the files that have been uploaded, the table
name for where the data was inserted, the status of the imported
records including the number of records that succeeded and
failed, and more. From here, the file can be viewed by clicking
on the link for the file since it is stored in the database. It
is also possible to view the failed records and the error text
of the failed records as well as the record text that failed.
To view the failed records, if there are any, click on the link
under the Failed column. This will be covered in detail during
the exercise towards the end of this chapter.
The Spreadsheet Import Repository is almost
the same. The difference is that since spreadsheet data was
copied and pasted into the wizard there is no file. However,
the user can see the table where the data was imported and the
status of the imported records, which includes the number of
records that succeeded and failed.
