Where Are We on Grid Implementation?

The 451 Group in its recently released report, Grids 2004: From Rocket Sciences to Business Services, writes:

“…..the grid computing developments will result commercially viable, mainframe like performance and manageability across distributed systems with in next 12 months”

The 451 group believes there is enough interest and initiative by the leading IT vendors to move Grid Computing into the commercial and business world. Commenting on the growth of the Grid environment and the role of various IT products, their report classifies the Grid related products and services vendors, are grouped as broader groups. They are as follows:

Tier One Grid vendors

This is a group, which includes vendors like HP, IBM, Microsoft and Sun. These companies have strong momentum and potential to capture Grid Market Share.

Tier Two Grid Vendors

This group contains the IT companies with strong emerging strategies and technologies in Grid Computing. Vendors in this category include Computer Associates, Intel, Oracle, Platform Computing, SGI and Veritas.

Pure-play Grid Vendors

These are emerging vendors with strong presence in specific areas. These companies are further categorized by functionality - grid enablement, file systems, provisioning, application decomposition, CPU scavengers and those offering enhancements to Globus; vendors in this category include Altair, Avaki, Axceleon, DataSynapse, Ejasent, Enigmatec, Entropia, GridFrastructure, GridIron, GridSystems, GridXpert, Powerllel, Tsunami Research, The Mind Electric and United Devices.
